Overcoming Procrastination

A big lesson learned a few years back was when my kids both had procrastinated on schoolwork creating big problems for them. I too had been procrastinating on things and ended up having more work than I wanted to have ahead of me. But hearing myself tell them, "If you just get it out of the way first, think about how the rest of your day will go. This is a life skill you are learning and work is the same way." It made me see my own procrastination - Nothing like listening to your own advice huh!

Quite often I hear the words "I can't", and negative "what if 's".  We are watching the news too much and mindlessly are on social media during this time more than ever. Now is not the time to procrastinate. Now is the time to focus on what you can do and what you want for your future. You should be planning well so you can have the future business you want. What if you ended up with your ideal business!

So here is my tip I gave my kids and myself. Look at what you have to do and break it up into a checklist of small items with a deadline. Take a break between each task and reward yourself. Do not multitask, so turn off your phone. For email and texts on your computer switch to do not disturb mode.  Since we don't all have teachers who are grading us which definitely holds you accountable, find an accountability person that holds each of you accountable with your plans and goals.

I love this theory I read from Jessica Abel - "Idea Debt is when you spend too much time picturing what a project is going to be like, too much time thinking about how awesome it will be to have this thing done and in the world, too much time imagining how cool you will look, how in-demand you’ll be, how much money you’ll make. And way too little time actually making the thing." One lesson we can all take is that it’s time to pay off the debt and move on.

You need to stop hyper-focusing on the idea and start doing the actions. So take out your calendar today set a date and plan it out. You must work on this daily or at least weekly until you get it done. Because sitting here waiting for what-if is only hurting you.

Now it is time for you to break through your procrastination, the world needs what you've got!
